Is a battery worth it?
Without a battery, much of your solar is exported while you are at work. A battery keeps it for the evening, when you use most electricity. It helps most when:
- you are out during the day and use most power in the evening
- you have, or plan, an electric car or heat pump
- you want to charge from the grid at a cheap night-time tariff
If you are home all day and already use most of your solar, a battery may not pay back as quickly. We tell you honestly at the survey.
Adding a battery to existing solar
Most systems can take a battery, whoever installed them. We check your inverter and fuse board, fit the battery and, where needed, apply to the network operator. Your existing export tariff carries on.
Safety
Batteries are fitted to the manufacturer's instructions with proper isolation, and the electrical work is tested and certified. We advise on the best place for it, usually a garage, utility room or outside wall.
Questions
How big a battery do I need?
About 5 kWh suits most homes with a 4 kW system. Bigger households or EV owners may want more. We size it from your usage.
Can I add a battery to solar panels fitted by another company?
Usually yes. We check the existing inverter and wiring at the survey first.
Does a battery work in a power cut?
Only if it is set up with a backup supply, which needs extra equipment. Ask us at the survey if you want this.
